The first amendment says,”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Excerpt from http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/first_amendment. The first amendment is basically prohibiting an establishment of a state-supported church. It separates church and the state. It also guarentees the freedom of worship, right to press and speech, right to assemble and petition. Theses rights protect us as U.S. citizens.
